Dancing to the Beat is Crucial!

We wanted to remind you how critical it is to dance to the beat of the music. Listening to salsa music at home or in your car and counting along is a great way to get the beat into your blood. Here's a good review if you'd like to practice counting the 123-pause, 567-pause salsa beat.

Level 1 - Adios & Adios con la Hermana

Adios: With Adios, we switch partners just like with enchufe that we learned last week. It's a fun move because the two partners get to use each other's momentum to change places in the middle of the move.

Adios con la Hermana: This move combines adios and enchufe. It's different from both in that it does not involve a partner change! You start with adios and then the lead turns his/her back to the middle of the circle and does an enchufe with the follow, finishing with a dile que no with the same partner.

Level 2 - Exhíbela and Echeverria (with variations)

Exhíbela: This move translates to "show her off!" You often hear this move called from Tiempo España, or sometimes called at the last second before a dame. It's a different direction for the follow to go - directly into the center of the circle and back to the lead's right side.

Echeverria: An easy and fun move, with multiple variations!  The key thing to remember is that you start on 7, and you turn your knees AWAY from your current partner. The rest falls into place by itself. The most common variations are Echeverria con Vuelta (spin) and Echeverria con Vuelta y Dame (spin and then partner change with dame.)

Beginners - Welcome! Guapea & Dame are your foundational moves

Guapea: Basic move in rueda (cuban style salsa dancing)

Dame: (Scroll down to see detailed step-by-step video.) Switch partners by lead bringing partner on right over to left. Dame is the same as Dile Que No - dame is what we call in a rueda circle and dile que no is what is done dancing one-on-one.

Dame: (Detailed step-by-step video, start at 2:00)
