Wed 9 Apr 2025 - Vacila and Sombrero
So much fun seeing you all again this week! After class we did two separate circles with more experienced dancers practicing the latest moves while first-timers also had their own circle to get started on rueda. Our new moves are Vacila (aka Vacílala) and Sombrero - they both have the same footwork for the follower and just have different use of hands. Remember leads - these moves require you to prep on 7 before the move starts! Watch the videos below so you can practice our new moves at home.
Vacila: This move is the foundation that will open the door to so many other moves for you! Sombrero, dedo, montaña, setenta, etc. The follow's footwork is the same for all these moves. And the leads need to prep before the move by bringing the follow's hands forward on 7 and showing the follow an open path to move forward on 1. The lead brings the follow forward on 1 and then leads the follow to spin on 2. With vacila, sombrero, and other similar moves, we do NOT automatically include a dame! (You stay with your partner.)
Another Vacila video with rueda circle:
Sombrero: You'll see in these videos that the follow's footwork is the same for sombrero as it was for vacila. The lead preps before the move on 7 as well. The difference is that the partners hold both hands throughout the move. Part of the lead's prep is to switch hands on 7: right to right and left to left, with the right hand above.
